Savanadurga
is located at a distance of 62 Kms from Bangalore & 10 KM from
Magadi town is well known monolith in the Magadi Taluk in Bangalore
district is also called Magadi hill. This massive granite, which is
second biggest in the State is rising to 4024 feet above sea level,
and standing on a base of 14 Kms in circumference. The summit consists
of two peaks, separated by a chasm, each being independent of the
other. One is called the Kari Gudda or black peak, the other is
Bili Gudda or White Peak. This hill is also a great tourist attraction
The earliest record of the name is from 1340 AD by Hoysala Ballala III
from Madabalu and it goes by the name of Savandi. Another view is that
the name is originated from Samantadurga attributed to a Samantharaya,
a governer under Ahchutaraya at Magadi although there is no
inscription. This was the secondary capital of the Magadi rulers such
as Kempegowda. from 1638 to 1728, Mysore took over this place and
Dalavayi Devaraja occupied this place with the palace at Nelapattana.
In 1792 Cornwallis captured the place from Tippu Sultan and this was
described by Colonel Wilks. Home in his select views of Mysore shows
distant views of the hill from Bangalore. He called it Savinadurga or
the fort of death. There were no steps to reach the hill top and it
was covered by Bamboos and other trees forming a barricade.
